Xmas approaches

As expected things are quiet on the install front with it being the last week of term. We officially break on the 23rd of December till the 4Th of January. Regards major works coming up we have two full wireless installs to do before then. Extra hands have been drafted in to make sure this work is completed on time.............as much merriment is to be had over the festive period!!!!

Things have been quiet on the blog front due to a crazy couple of weeks for me. My son broke his ankle, I had to have time off with my back going into spasm for no reason and to top it all off my combi boiler at home decided to give up the ghost.....3 days with no hot water or heating is not fun!!! Anyway my son is in a plaster cast, my back is better and I have a new boiler.

Hope you all have a good festive period and I will return with new updates once we return to work in the new year.

Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year to all.

How it should be done

This is how a projector should be mounted to a ceiling. The channel rails are attached at each end to a steel girder and then bolts are used to take any lateral movement out of the rails. This minimizes any movement caused by vibration and keeps the projector image steady.

Training day for the boys

Had a informative morning today. Epson sent one of their reps today to give us a demonstration and overlay of the capabilities of their projectors. We were shown the basic fault finding procedures, how to utilise all the menu features and basic maintenance. Most of this was second nature as we have extensive experience with projectors.

The most interesting thing was the ability for remote monitoring of their units. You can observe everything from unit temperature, lamp hours, any faults that occur. You can also programme the units to power up or down at a specific time of the day and vary each day as needed per classroom. Remote access also allows the full access of the unit for everything from keystone to brightness and contrast of the units image so certain minor problems could be solved over the phone.

Obviously for primary schools this feature would be extremely useful if the school had Epson units throughout (no biase towards a product here!!). Those schools with say even half a dozen units I think would benefit from this as early indications of problems would be very helpful. Best of all the software for this is free.......

Extending the lifespan of equipment

I've just carried out a projector check at one of the primary schools we support. Just a basic check on lamp hours and image quality. Some of their units are approaching 4 and half years old. They have a projector maintenance contract with us which also includes a twice yearly service of the units.

This twice yearly service has undoubtedly helped in prolonging the life of their units as any problems can be picked up on before they become more serious. It just goes to show that a good maintenance programme really can help schools save money in the long run.

The saviour returns....

After a fortnight recharging his batteries and light sabre our fearless leader has returned. Though fully rested, he has now to catch up with 2 weeks of emails and quotes and general paperwork.

On the installs front we have a meeting at a large grammar school who are looking for a wireless solution. We have also been receiving enquiries from schools outside Bradford regarding installation work.

Everything else is just ticking along nicely with a healthy mix of projector bulbs, network points, audio installs and the occasional projector to swap out.

On a funny note I was witness to something rather amusing last week. A large primary in Bradford is having some major building works. A new hall needed 40 tonnes of concrete pouring for its floor. This was ferried through a network of pipes. Unfortunately as they started to pump the concrete the pipes failed at the first bend........pouring about 2 tonnes all over the path. A couple of workmen then spent about half an hour furiously cleaning it up. They were not amused!! I was.

Primary T to the rescue!!!!

Saturday the 11 th of October the boys from Primary T came to the rescue of a school in Shipley. Some wonderful person or persons thought they would break into a school and steal some equipment......idiots springs to mind.

Unfortunately the school is receiving a visit from OFFSTED this coming Monday. We, being the great company we are, went and re-installed said equipment on Saturday morning. Everything up and running and nothing out of place. The headmaster is extremely happy.

No problem to us. We are only to happy to oblige in such emergencies.

Mine and Si's ears will no longer ring!!!!

Our fearless leader and secret jedi master is embarking on a new adventure over the next two weeks. He's taking some time off!!!!! Yes the mighty Dally has finally given in to fatigue, and his pink light sabre wants charging.....

We wish him a restful fortnight and hope he returns fully charged. But work must go on and the weeks coming are simmering nicely with projectors to service and change, network points to install, blown projector bulbs to change along with any emergencies.

Look on the plus side, Si has the company phone to answer and I don't!!!!

I will update you with our next two weeks adventures soon.

Good news for anyone looking for a short throw projector solution for class presentations, in conjunction with one of our suppliers we can now offer the package below. We can now do an Hitachi short throw projector (ULTRA SHORT – 450mm throw distance), with wall mount (normally £100) fully installed for £949! This might sound expensive, but you cant even buy the projector for less than £909 from anyone else. And of course, we’re selling them with a full 3yr warranty and 3yr lamp warranty.

Active board 100 series

The new active board series. Installation is easier as the brackets are bigger and seem stronger. It looks good too. Its powered via USB and not a power pack so less cables are involved. Two down sides in my opinion are the lack of a pen holder and still no handles on the packaging......its murder trying to carry one of those on your own.

But i like them.

Quiet...........????

Please disregard my previous blog about things calming down.......not happened !!!! Been a busy week for the first one back, projector bulbs to replace, damaged network points to repair, and other little niggly things still hanging over from those schools who have had major rennovations done over the summer.
Managed to finish off another ICT suite for a school in Shipley this morning. Involved a full projector install and 20 machines to set up ready for the kids.
Another school in Bradford is nearing its completion of works and therefor we will be running all their data cables tomorrow afternoon. Fingers crossed brand new ceiling and little old insulation......nasty stuff.
This could well be my last update for a while because as from Monday I have a week off......yippee!!!! Lots of relaxing I think. Also more photo's coming soon.....

The end is near......

Well its the final week of our summer holiday installation work. As some schools dont reopen till next Monday its given us a bit of extra time to catch up on outstanding work and the few extra jobs that always pop up. Looking forward to seeing a lot of large building projects being completed in Shipley and Bradford.

We also ventured into the world of secondary schools this summer. It never ceases to amaze me in how many times I can get lost in one morning and over two days!!!!

Look out for future updates and pictures.

Primary School Projector and Screen Install

another day, another hall!

Monday, 10 August 2009

Holiday work so far.......

Well its been hectic couple of weeks. Done everything from projector swaps and servicing to cisco wireless installs to huge hall screens and sound systems. Our two week campaign aimed at promoting projector cleaning has been well received in Halifax. Some of the schools have enquired about other services we provide.

Heaton Primary are in the midst of building works!! We had to go and remove about 4000m of cat5e cable. This will need rerunning once works have finished.....should be fun.

The ICT suite at High Craggs will be completed next week so keep an eye out for the final pictures.
Another couple of schools in the Bradford area are also due for completion over the next fortnight so I will be posting pictures as work is completed...........There will be lots and lots!!!

The Lord of Projector Servicing!!

Went to a school in Rastrick, Brighouse this morning to continue the war against poor and uncleaned projectors. Normally you have to remove each unit from its mount to be able to service it. Not today my friends!!! The ICT co-ordinator at this school had removed all the schools units and placed them in one room for servicing. It turns out each classroom was undergoing cleaning and decorating..........

Amen to the Lord of Projector Servicing for freeing my day for other work.......hang on something not right here!!!!!!!!

Summer hols

Its been a hectic start to our summer period. An ICT suite to strip out yesterday including 30 black bags full of old insulation........ VERY ITCHY!!!!! Had an emergency call to go repair a cat5e cable at another school. Builders working there cut through it accidentally. And we have also started our summer campaign of projector cleaning to help raise awareness of the benefits of looking after hardware such as projectors.

Pictures will follow shortly of the above ICT suite from start to finish.

Fun times for Installations Team!

I was witness to something rather amusing this week. Picture the scene of my manager working in a storeroom on a communications cab. This is no ordinary room though as the lights only work with movement and are also on timer. So everytime he tries to punch down the cat 5(ethernet) cable into a patch panel the lights go off!!! Rather amusing watching him attempt some weird dance move whilst up step ladders just to make the lights stay on. Quite enjoyed laughing at his expense. He asked me not to mention this but.......always nice to laugh at managements expense!!!
